Employer Program Responsibilities

As a participant in the Capstone WBL or Work Study programs, you have a few responsibilities.  These responsibilities are to your student employee and to me the Career Prep Coordinator.  As the Career Prep Coordinator, I will do everything I can to ensure that the learning experience you are providing is successful and rewarding.  I will do my best to keep you informed of any changes to the Child Labor Laws and MI-OSHA requirements.  Listed below are some of the responsibilities that you need to do.

Contact the Career Prep Coordinator about any changes in your student learner's employment (attendance, termination, etc).
If your student learner is being released from school to work at your location, please schedule them during the time that they are being released form school.
Convey any problems that are being encountered with the student learner.
Report any excessive student absences to the Career Prep Coordinator.
Provide a broad and varied work experience for the student learner, avoiding hazardous and dangerous situations.
Provide safety training for all required dangerous situations and maintain records of the training provided.
Maintain accurate records of the student learner's experience, including a Training Agreement, work permit and hours worked.
Complete and return a student learner evaluation once every marking period to the Career Prep Coordinator (paper or electronic method).
Assist the school by adjusting work schedules when necessary to meet classroom schedules.
Return work permits of unemployed students to Greenville High School or the Career Prep Coordinator.

As the employer, you have the opportunity to help mold the employees of tomorrow's workforce.  This responsibility is enormous, but you're very capable of performing that task and we respect and appreciate your willingness to take on this task.

Work Permits

Below is a table with links to printable work permits.  The link identified as a PDF file will open using your Acrobat Reader and be printable, but will require completion by hand.

A CA-7 work permit is to be used for any student between the ages of sixteen (16) and eighteen (18) years old.  The CA-6 work permit is for students under the age of sixteen (16) years.  Work permits must be completed filled out by the employer and student before being verified by the school.  The work permit must also be on file with the employer prior to the students first day on the job.  Work permits are required of all students under 18 years of age, including charter, home-schooled and academy students.

As an added note, it is suggested that the time of employment for the student be the broadest possible time allowable.  For student sixteen (16) years and old, this would be 6:00am until 10:30 pm except on Fridays and Saturdays.  On these two days the student may work until 11:30pm.  A deviation of hours, completed and filed by the employer with the State of Michigan will allow the student to work later hours.

Labor Law Posters & Workplace Compliance

Employers in the State of Michigan must provide visible labor information in the form of posters in the workplace.  The location of this information should be shown to your student learner and displayed where they can review it, typically near a time clock or similar location.  The State of Michigan, Department of Labor & Economic Growth has identified the posters that are required to posted at each business.  A list of those posters can be found by clicking on this link - http://medc.michigan.org/services/startups/appendix_b2/

An independent source for these posters is Poster Compliance Co.  I use this company when purchasing posters for a reference for students.  Below is a list of topics covered in their posters and images of those posters.  Please be assured that I'm not promoting this company, but providing you with a source if you need posters.
